What is this blog going to be about?
So my first post – I’d guess I’d best explain why I chose Balance as the name of the blog and give you some idea of what to expect!
My intention with this Blog is for it to be about work and life balance. I believe that to be happy in your job you need to have a Balance of work and life activities. Some people might claim that you can’t have it all. But I think you can whilst not compromising on other commitments – to either your family or friends, and that you can also be happy whilst doing it.
Why am I doing it?
Mostly for myself but if my ramblings help others then it’s even better.
To give you a bit of background over the last few years I’ve gone from being:
- hard-working
- reasonably successful in my career
- deeply discontented and unhappy
- stressed
- overworked
- a perfectionist
to:
- hard-working
- very successful in my career – a promotion and two mid-year pay raises which are only ever granted to high performers
- happy and contented doing a job that brings me great satisfaction and a sense of real achievement
- working normal office hours (and feeling just a bit guilty about the other people that don’t get it and work till 7-8pm most nights)
- not worrying about perfection
- getting the right results but the right way – involving people and getting them to be involved in achieving solutions that everyone benefits from. (owed in no small way to what I’ve learnt from John Maxwell’s book The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. When I get around to writing up a list of the best books I’ve read this year this will almost certainly be at the top)
As well that in my personal life I’ve:
- Taken my first ever foreign holidays – traveling to Greece, Thailand, Turkey, Crete and soon to Cuba (It doesn’t take a genius to spot my love of the Eastern-Med there
) - Overcome a fear of heights by taking a trip in a hot air balloon (90 minutes over Cappadocia in central Turkey)
- Bought a house (although I’m still in the process of fitting the kitchen before I can really move in)
- Been to see Nerina Pallot, Wilco and The Felice Brothers play live – my first music concerts in over 10 years!
So I speak from some experience. It’s worked for me and I hope that over time it can help you as well.
[...] Very Little (via zenhabits.net) struck a chord with me because I’ve actually being doing a lot of what he suggests over the last few years ( in fact it was only a combination of actually doing this and realising [...]
